Roses have been used as food source for generations. Rose hips are full of nutritious substances, most notably vitamin C and antioxidants. Everyone knows rose hip jam or jelly is any pancake best friend. But what about rose petals? When thinking about rose petals as food, first thing that comes to our mind are desserts, like Turkish delight and rose flavored pudding. But why should their use be limited only to sweets? We in Pheno Geno Roses have used methods of classical breeding as well as modern breeding techniques to develop roses that do not only look beautiful in the garden or in your vase, but also look good in your plate and taste even better! And now, we are very excited to share with you the first photo of PGR edible rose variety used for the preparation of a Vitello with fried gambas seasoned with parsley pesto and all together beautifully garnished with fresh lettuce, tomato and edible rose petals. This delicious meal was kindly prepared by Antoon Elberse, a chef from the City Hotel in Oss, the Netherlands, so if you happen to be staying in, be sure to ask for a meal with PGR roses!
